Communication on this page is designed for families of students in our North Carolina Public School System. Our Communication Plan with families includes monthly listserve updates through the North Carolina Parent Teacher Association (NCPTA). To learn more about North Carolina's Multi-Tiered System of Support framework, please check out two resources below, our NC MTSS Fact Sheet and our Parent Brief. We also highlight a few "Helpful Websites" and an archive of our NCPTA Communication.

Families typically know the value of taking part in their student’s education, but as you are settling into a new school year some research about the “why” maybe helpful. This article reminds us that regardless of family income or background, students with involved parents are more likely to:
  • Earn higher grades
  • Be promoted, pass their classes, and earn credits
  • Attend school regularly
  • Have better social skills, show improved behavior, and adapt well to school
These outcomes describe some of the results of an efficient multi-tiered system of support. Families are a part of that system and when they positively engage in the school experience, students have a better chance at success. That engagement starts in preschool and goes even past high school graduation. When talking to your student about their school experience, expect them to attend regularly and to excel in both academic and social-emotional endeavors. When they are struggling, troubleshoot with school staff for potential solutions to get them back on the road to a positive school experience. Problem-solving around academics and behavior is the foundation of a Multi-Tiered System of Support.

Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) widens the scope of conversation to encompass academics, behavior and attendance data sets. Why is this important to know? Schools implementing MTSS focus on collaborative plans to assist with increasing attendance, in partnership with families and community partners. Getting students to school can prove difficult throughout the years, leading to possible academic struggles. This link will provide information on the “why” and “how” of promoting strong attendance in school.

NC MTSS is a multi-tiered framework designed to promote school improvement. The focus on MTSS is on providing all students a strong foundation of instruction with additional research-based practices for students who need more supports. Ongoing communication and collaboration is essential for successful implementation of an MTSS. NC DPI is providing assistance to school districts so improvement plans continue to address meaningful ways to communicate and work with families and other community partners. Families are valuable stakeholders in creating effective, safe and sustainable school environments.
